Trauma Isn't Just What Happened — It's How It Lives in Your Body Today

Trauma has a way of living in the body — in the tightness in your chest, the way certain sounds or smells take you somewhere else, the hypervigilance that never fully turns off. When you have lived through painful experiences, critical incidents, or chronic emotional neglect, the past rarely stays in the past. It shows up in sudden emotional triggers, physical tension, difficulty trusting others, and a nervous system that can't seem to find its way back to calm.

Trauma often presents as:

  • Hypervigilance & Physical Reactivity — Feeling constantly on edge, easily startled, or unable to relax even in safe environments.

  • Intrusive Memories & Nightmares — Unwanted flashes or vivid replays of past events that disrupt your sleep and focus.

  • Emotional Numbing & Detachment — Feeling disconnected from your own body, your loved ones, or your sense of purpose.

  • Chronic Guilt & Shame — Carrying self-blame for events that were outside of your control.

Talk therapy can help, and for many people it does. But trauma often requires more than words. You do not have to live stuck in fight, flight, or freeze. At Wellness Associates, we offer a range of trauma-informed approaches that work with the whole person — mind, body, and creative expression — designed to resolve traumatic memories gently, without requiring you to endlessly relive every painful detail.

Our Approach to Trauma-Informed Care

A trauma-informed approach means we understand that many of the struggles people bring to therapy — anxiety, numbing, relational difficulties, shame — are often responses to experiences that overwhelmed the nervous system. It means we go at your pace. We don't push. We create safety before anything else, because safety is the foundation that makes healing possible.

Our clinicians are trained to recognize trauma responses and to work within them rather than around them.

EMDR — Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing A structured, evidence-based therapy that uses bilateral stimulation (eye movements, tapping, or sound) to help the brain reprocess traumatic memories. EMDR is one of the most well-researched trauma treatments available and is recommended by the American Psychological Association and the VA.

ART — Accelerated Resolution Therapy A newer protocol that combines elements of EMDR and imagery rescripting to resolve traumatic memories, often in fewer sessions than traditional approaches. Many clients report significant relief within 1–5 sessions.

Expressive Arts Therapy Not all experiences can be put into words — especially early trauma, grief, or experiences that happened before language developed. Expressive arts therapy uses drawing, painting, movement, writing, and other creative modalities as pathways into healing. No artistic ability required. The process matters, not the product.

Play Therapy (for children) Children process their world through play. Our play therapy-trained clinicians create a safe, structured environment where children can express and work through difficult experiences at their own developmental level.

Trauma-Sensitive Yoga (TCTSY) Facilitated by our TCTSY-certified clinician, trauma-sensitive yoga is a body-based approach developed specifically for trauma survivors. It is not a fitness class — it is a gentle, consent-based practice that helps people reconnect with their bodies and build a felt sense of safety. No yoga experience necessary.

Somatic Therapy Somatic approaches pay attention to what is happening in the body during a session — noticing sensations, patterns of tension, and the way emotions move (or get stuck) physically. When integrated with talk therapy, somatic work can reach what words alone sometimes cannot.

FAQs

I'm scared to talk about what happened. Do I have to tell the whole story?

No. Trauma therapy doesn't require you to narrate everything in detail — and for some approaches, like EMDR and ART, you don't have to say much at all. We go at your pace. Creating safety comes before anything else, because healing isn't possible without it. You will never be pushed to share more than you're ready to.

What's the difference between EMDR and ART?

Both are evidence-based trauma protocols. ART (Accelerated Resolution Therapy) incorporates elements of EMDR along with voluntary memory replacement, allowing you to change the imagery associated with a traumatic memory rather than just reprocessing it. Some clients prefer ART because it often works faster — many notice significant change within just a few sessions. Your therapist can walk you through both and help you decide.

How long does trauma therapy take?

It depends on what you're working through, how long you've been carrying it, and which approach we use. Some protocols like ART can produce significant relief in just a few sessions. Processing deep or complex trauma, or trauma that's been present for many years, typically takes longer. Your therapist will work with you to set realistic goals and check in on your progress along the way. There's no fixed timeline — you move at the pace that's right for you.
